Core Fund
The Core Fund is the larger of the two funds comprising the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS). All WRS members have at least half -- if not all -- of their pension account contributions in this fully diversified, balanced fund. It includes a mixture of holdings and is diversified to help stabilize the effects of market changes. The impact of the Core Fund returns is smoothed over five years.
Variable Fund
Active WRS participants have the option of having 50% of their retirement contributions made to the Variable Fund, an equity (stock) fund. Annuities fully reflect market changes and participants are exposed to a higher degree of risk because of possible losses from unfavorable stock market performance for the potential of higher long-run returns. Variable Fund returns are not smoothed and negative returns could cause annuities to decrease below the initial base amount.
