Invest in Wisconsin

SWIB is involved with Wisconsin businesses ranging from small, family-owned companies to billion-dollar manufacturers shipping worldwide. Some Wisconsin investments occur as part of our everyday investmentPhoto of Capitol activity in the national and global markets because Wisconsin businesses participate in these markets. Other investments in Wisconsin are made because SWIB staff make special efforts to look at some of the excellent investment opportunities around the state. As with all SWIB holdings, these investments are done within the context of the Board's fiduciary responsibility to the funds we manage.

New investments in Wisconsin companies for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2010, totaled about $463 million. The companies included are either headquartered in Wisconsin or easily identified as having a significant portion of their business activities in Wisconsin. Investments include:

  • $100 million of new investments in stocks of publicly held Wisconsin companies;
  • $35 million of new investments in high quality commercial paper issued by Wisconsin companies;
  • $355 million in NOW accounts from Wisconsin banks; and
  • $36.5 million in private equity (venture capital) and loans to Wisconsin companies.

The companies included in the totals are either headquartered or have a significant portion of their business activities in the state. New and existing investments in Wisconsin domiciled companies totaled nearly $1.13 billion. SWIB invested an additional $11.2 billion in companies with 20 or more Wisconsin employees, bringing the total investments in companies with economic ties to Wisconsin to over $12.3 billion at the end of fiscal year 2010.
